For those of you out there concerned that real rock n’ roll is dead and buried, a group of rowdy, sweaty young dudes called Western Star have emerged swinging out of Baltimore, ready to kick you in the teeth with their hard driving mix of rock and punk, laced with just a hint of that dirty, country twang.

After a few years of bouncing around between Virginia, Boston and the family ranch of frontman Max Jeffers in Tyler, TX, the four piece band of Jeffers, his brother and bassist Nick, his best friend and guitar player Justin Myers and drummer Bob Shade was finally forged, and Western Star made a home for themselves in Baltimore. A few years later, they cut their debut, Fireball, which was released on Saustex Records in late 2015 (read Elmore’s review of the album here).

Today, Elmore is premiering the lyric video for “Ghostchaser,” a track from their debut. Bold lyrics blast across raw footage of the guys cavorting around the city, jamming together and playing a show in a cramped performance space that they dominate with their unapologetic, unfiltered punk energy. The track mixes throbbing drums and wailing guitars with clever, erudite lyrics; “I flew back to the Golden Age with the ghost of Socrates,” the song opens. Jeffers’ nasal vocals drive the track, recalling the Thermals or the hard driving sneer of the Old 97s, one of the band’s biggest influences, and their recent tourmates.

Follow the guys on Facebook here to keep up with them on tour, and check out “Ghostchaser” below.
