“Chris and I were looking for the right people to make music with,” Darcy Malone has said about Still Life, “and when we found these guys, everything came together and made sense. We realized we could stop worrying and focus on the love of playing music together. That’s what this record is about.”

She’s referring to her husband, Chris Boye, who provides vocals and guitar for Malone and the Tangle. Listening to the 12 tracks on Still Life, it’s very easy to see that Malone did find the right people and that this album is filled with love, fun, teamwork and a cohesiveness that is quite hard to come by these days.

Why a “tangle”? Malone is a New Orleans native and the daughter of Dave Malone of the legendary band, The New Orleans Radiators. Pop, rock, blues, soul, R&B… the influences of every band member can be heard in this album. It’s indeed a tangle of sounds. Saxophones, piano and keyboard sounds are provided by Jagon Eldridge, who is educated in the jazz classics, but grew up listening to everything from his native New Orleans to punk-rock. The rock & roll guitar riffs come through thanks to Boye and Glenn Newbauer. Bassist Craig Toomey and drummer Billy Schell add groove to the sound. Malone brings the R&B via her raw, raspy voice. “ Motel Room” and “By the Sea” are two stand out tracks that show off this eclectic flow of sounds throughout the album.

Still Life will please your ears and satisfy your craving for something new and unique. Recorded and mixed by Rick Nelson of The Afghan Whigs at Marigny Recording Studios in New Orleans and mastered by Richard Dodd (Tom Petty’s Wildflowers, Dixie Chicks’ Not Ready to Make Nice), Still Life is an album about being big and bold all while being yourself.
