Israeli-born, New York-based guitarist and composer Oz Noy played in front of a sold out house at The Iridium on Thursday night, the middle set of a three-night stint. The audience was sophisticated enough to appreciate the nuances of the music that seems to strain against boundaries, displaying elements of blues anguish, the power of rock and the harmonic density of jazz.
Oz Noy, whose jaw-dropping guitar skills make it easy to hire a rhythm section: Jimmy Haslip currently working with YellowJackets, a two time Grammy Award winning band, played bass; Dave Weckl, acknowledged among fans, peers and the international music community as one of the great living drummers of all time, rounded out the trio on drums.
The band performed seamlessly with each musician seeming to know what the other was thinking. The group played a mixture of tunes including some from their new album “Who Gives A Funk.” The set consisted of seven tunes that the trio put its own stamp on: “Get Down,,” “Zig Zag,” “Better Get It In Your Soul,” “Downside Up,” Twice in a While,” and “Slow Grease.” The group ended the set with their version of the James Brown classic “I Feel Good.”
The trio is performing for a third night and any music lover who wants to see world class musicians performing brilliantly should make a point to look up Oz Noy.
