Exclusive: Chris Maxwell Recruited Some Special Help For His “Things Have Changed For Me” Music Video

Chris Maxwell

Chris Maxwell has spent a lifetime lending his voice to others. As one half of the production team Elegant Too, he has worked with artists including They Might Be Giants, Iggy Pop and Yoko Ono, and has written songs for the hit television shows Bob’s Burgers and Inside Amy Schumer. And though he’s found brushes with success in bands the Gunbunnies and Skeleton Key, he’s finally ready (and finally found the time) to forge his own path as a solo artist, offering fans a glimpse into the world according to Chris Maxwell– from the mouth of Chris Maxwell.  Arkansas Summer, his solo debut, was released May 4th, and is a long-time-coming, intimate exploration of his roots, a journey back to the people and places of his youth in Little Rock. As he puts it, “a collection of songs about where I’m from and the people that had an impact on me.”

Today, Elmore is premiering the music video for “Things Have Changed For Me,” a song from his recent release. Maxwell confesses, “[it] talks about where I am now, and is a bright light compared to the dark confessionals that come before it.” It’s a gentle, folk leaning track, rooted in Maxwell’s gentle, whispered rasp. Footage of the artist playing the acoustic guitar are intercut with surreal images of a young boy in all black playing in the woods. But, as Maxwell explains, the song is a meditation on the joys of his life– most notably his home, his wife and his son, and it turns out they were an integral part of the video. “It was shot in a big field behind my house,” he recalls. “I drive by it every day I take my son, Angus, to school. On the way home with him and my wife Kelly, we pulled over and walked around. I wasn’t thinking about making a video.  Angus had his Halloween ninja outfit in the car, he put it on and started spinning around.  I grabbed my guitar and Kelly started filming it all.” Thank goodness she did, because without it, we wouldn’t have the simple, beautiful and spontaneous record of the family’s love.
