Sum 41 – 10/19 – St. Andrews (Detroit, MI)

sum 41Originally from Ajax, Ontario, Canada, Pop punk veterans Sum 41 consists of five members including Deryck Whibley, lead guitarist/backing vocalist Dave “Brownsound” Baksh, co-lead guitarist/backing vocalist Tom Thacker, bassist/backing vocalist Cone McCaslin and drummer Frank Zummo. The band was founded in 1996 and originally called Kaspar. In 1999, the band signed an international record deal with Island Records and in 2000, they first EP, Half Hour of Power, was released. The band’s debut album, All Killer, No Filler, in 2001. Its first single, “Fat Lip,” which helped the album achieve mainstream success, reached number one on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart and continues to remain as the band’s most successful single. The album also became certified platinum in the United States, in Canada and in the United Kingdom. Since the 90s, the band has continued to rock the charts with every album they’ve released making this band a one-of-a-kind. They are surely a force to be reckoned with and the world will continue to hear them roar on their latest album 13 Voices, out on Oct. 7 via Hopeless Records.

When Whibley began writing for 13 Voices, his four-month stint in the hospital immediately followed after. “I had to learn how to do everything again — my motor skills, learning how to play guitar again… I couldn’t even walk at the time, “Whibley recalls of the unfortunate incident. “It was really difficult, but at the same time if I didn’t have a record to make, I don’t think I would have recovered as quickly, or even at all. Writing music gave me a purpose. I had to get better.” Once Whibley’s health improved drastically, he was able to continue writing songs for the new album. Soon enough, 13 Voices was in the process of being recorded, produced and engineered by Whibley at his home in Los Angeles. “Fake My Own Death” was the first song released off the new album and it has gathered a lot of attention — Currently at 3+ million views, the video for the song quickly went viral and garnered praise from Billboard, MTV, Alternative Press, Huffington Post, Mashable, Entertainment Weekly, Loudwire, Bustle and more. The ten-track album is the band’s first LP in five years, following up Screaming Bloody Murder (2011), which featured the Grammy Nominated song “Blood In My Eyes.”
