Recently signed musician, Ally Venable, has released her debut album, No Glass Shoes, and it’s clear: the kid’s got talent. The Houston based guitarist and her band have been racking up the accolades, including winning the East Texas Music award for Blues Band and Ally was awarded Female Guitarist of the year for the second year in a row.
The lead off track is a fine original shot of blues-rock, a tale of unrequited love where “that train never comes,” aptly-titled “Trainwreck.” “Woke Up This Mornin” has a groove that will remind you of of John Lee Hooker by way of ZZ Top, while “Too Much Too Soon,” is nicely embellished by producer Steve Harp.
Ally’s got an energetic version of Junior Well’s “Messin’ with the Kid”; what a great way to display her talents. If there were any doubts, go check out the YouTube clip of this one. Ally comes off as much older seventeen while playing Bonnie Raitt’s “Love Me Like a Man.”
Ally Venable is one of those rare talents that have found their love for the blues so young, and you just know she’s going to be a household name someday. As a debut, it’s a great showing, and with time and a little more experience, her next album will be even better.
