Well here’s an old school piano trio disc for you. Forceful, fluid and free form, pianist Bejerano and his minimalist and ever malleable cohorts, bassist Josh Allen and drummer Michael Piolet, score high points for their fire and fierce command of the trio setting.

Bejerano’s left hand hangs in dark and tolling on the rolling rumble of “The Reckoning Song,” the opening track and true harbinger to the music on Trio Miami. “Disturbing Behavior,” found further down the track list, also sets this same high powered dynamism into play. In between, the trio switches moods like the seasoned pros their ages belie with the jumpy gait of Sonny Rollins’ “Airegin,” the punchy pop/bop “Old School” and a Bill Evans-like take on Peter Gabriel’s moody meditation, “Blood of Eden.”

Trio Miami brings to the distinct fore all the licks, tricks, and twists of song a young pianist can learn sharing bandstands with the iconic likes of Roy Haynes, Dave Holland, Arturo Sandoval, Pat Methaney, Christian McBride and many celebrated others. So let’s celebrate Trio Miami.
