Cohen’s got himself a real sweet disc happening here as he ventures to celebrate the peaceful transition of groove, instinct, insight, and grace from one elder statesman, Jimmy Cobb, to the creative young lions making the music swing and live on.

Volume 1 of Cohen’s envisioned ongoing Master Legacy Series features drummer Cobb revisiting and reinventing his deep swing on touchstones such as “When I Fall In Love,” “Hard Times,” and “Two Bass Hit” to fit within Cohen’s vision. The pianist’s exuberant artistry ably abetted and fluidly supported by bassist Yasushi Nakamura and alto sax man Godwin Lewis, is an effortless free flow of ideas. Cohen’s own comps, notably “Folk Song” and “Mr. Robinson” express an understanding of jazz tradition well beyond his twenty six years. Give it a good listen.
