Question: What song was played by radio stations more than any other song during
the 20th century?
Answer: You've Lost that Lovin' Feeling by the Righteous Brothers

Phil Spector produced "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," cowritten by Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, using his famous "Wall of Sound" production. "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" entered the Top Forty the day after Christmas 1964 and hit #1 two months later. The song ran for nearly four minutes (3:45), but Spector listed the time as 3:05 on the label because radio stations wouldn't play songs that ran much longer than 3 minutes.

The Righteous Brothers were Bobby Hatfield, who died November 5, 2003, and Bill Medley. They came together in 1962 as the Paramours. In March, 1963, they released "Little Latin Lupe Lu" as The Righteous Brothers. They were given their name by black fans who responded to their voices with an approving, "That's righteous, brother!" They were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

Phil Spector was born in the Bronx in 1940. He began writing and recording original songs with classmate Marshall Lieb. Joined by a third friend, Annette Bard, they formed the Teddy Bears and had a Top Ten hit with "To Know Him Is to Love Him" in 1958. The title came from the inscription on his father's tombstone.

Known for his "Wall of Sound" production, Spector produced hits for several artists, including The Righteous Brothers, The Beatles, The Ronettes, and many others. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989.

Phil Spector was charged with murder in the shooting death of an actress Lana Clarkson at his hilltop mansion on February 3, 2003.

The top 5 songs played by radio stations during the 20th century (according to BMI) were:

  • You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin' - The Righteous Brothers
  • Never My Love - The Association
  • Yesterday - The Beatles
  • Stand By Me - Ben E. King
  • Can't Take My Eyes Off of You – Frankie Valli
