Question One: During the late 1960s, rock and jazz music came together in myriad ways. Charles Lloyd and Herbie Hancock broke several barriers. Chicago, the Electric Flag, and Blood, Sweat & Tears brought jazz into the rock world. Who was the original leader and impetus behind BS&T?
Answer: After playing with Bob Dylan and fresh from the Blues Project, Al Kooper assembled the original lineup of BS&T. Their first recording, in 1968, was "Child Is Father to the Man." Soon afterwards, Kooper moved on and was replaced by lead singer David Clayton Thomas. Though they had several hits and became well established, the original sound, initiated by Kooper, was never quite the same.

Question Two: Bonnie Raitt is a known lover of rhythm & blues, though her recordings sweep nearly every genre. Politically and socially active throughout her career, she was instrumental in organizing a charitable foundation to pay homage to those who inspired her. What is the foundation? As a proponent of safe energy and strongly opposed to nuclear energy, what group did she co-found during the late 1970s?
Answer: Bonnie Raitt, privileged daughter of actor and Broadway star John Raitt, raises money to help aging R&B artists, who were often denied their rightful earnings, through the Rhythm and Blues Foundation. During the 17970s, she helped found MUSE (Musicians for Safe Energy) along with John Hall (of Orleans and now a US congressman from Dutchess County in NY) and Jackson Browne. During their lasting friendship, both Raitt and Browne played benefit concerts for Hall's congressional run in 2006 just as she and Hall did for George McGovern in 1972 when both were virtually unknown.
