John Hammond
Rough & Tough
(Chesky)

For the better part of the last five decades, John Hammond has kept the tradition of the acoustic blues troubadour alive with his brilliant acoustic guitar and harmonica playing, not to mention the constant time keeping with his left foot. He is truly a one-man band and has been called a "white Robert Johnson" by many critics.

Choosing New York's St. Peter's Episcopal Church as the venue for this recording added a rich sound to his 35th release. He channels such great bluesmen as Muddy Waters, with interpretations of "Still A Fool" and "I Can't Be Satisfied." His harp hero, Little Walter, would smile at his versions of "Up the Line" and "Got to Find My Baby." An interesting track coupling of a light-hearted "Chattanooga Choo-Choo" and "Statesboro Blues" exemplifies the original Blind Willie McTell versions. Again, homage paid to the great bluesmen of the past.

This solo effort allows Hammond to dig deep into the roots of the blues and will be treasured by his fans.
