Exclusive: Stream Nashville Band The Delta Saints’ Experimental New Album

1-0918Active for just a few years, Nashville-based rock band The Delta Saints have developed a signature sound of roots-blues efforts and huge rhythms, a sound their fans have grown accustomed to and appreciative of. On their second full-length album, though, Bones, officially releasing tomorrow, The Delta Saints let go of the training wheels and experiment fully with their sounds, combining their trademark blues-rock with new ventures into folk-country and psychedelic tempos.

Bones is ten tracks of fast-paced, genre-bending experimentation, but is as cohesive as the rest of the band’s discography. As if acting as a warning, the album starts off with the swirling, eerie percussion on “Sometimes I Worry”, immediately introducing listeners to soulful lead vocals and rough-and-tough rhythms, but is softened next by the record’s title track, which also starts with crowded beats and slinking vocals demanding we “Be the wind/Not the willow.” Perhaps the most intriguing track on the album is “Zydeco”, which starts in an over-the-top, Gothic tune then dives straight into a piano-based, popularized beat, the two different melodies dancing with and around each other.

Bones is thematic and easy to follow in that almost every track begins with a flurry of percussive, psychedelic rhythms and is recovered by roots-y vocals, gritty lyrics, and expansive, rollicking instrumentation. While the record still retains its typical Delta Saints blues-roots fashion, the best parts of it are the new arrangements the band lets loose on and experiments with, almost as if the music they plant nurtures their growth as musicians and songwriters.
