It seems lofty, but in fact it may not be an overstatement to say that the Staple Singers are one of the most important American musical acts of the 20^th century. After all, in just a few decades, they created a brand new sound in American music, fusing blues, county, folk and gospel in a way that would significantly impact the music to come after.
