The sibling harmonies of The Cactus Blossoms are often compared to the Everly Brothers. With good reason– Jack Torrey and Page Burkum are brothers from Minneapolis, who definitely conjure the sound of those other legendary musical brothers, not to mention many other classic country and rock n’ roll musicians of that era. I caught them opening for Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets in New York last year, and was immediately struck by their retro-leaning country songs and sound. With no backing band, they each played acoustic guitar and sang, beautifully.

This stunning new release of all originals, features a full band with production by the esteemed JD McPherson. The opening track is the very danceable “Stoplight Kisses,” featuring a great shuffle rhythm. The album also contains some heartfelt ballads such as “If I Can’t Win,” and the touching “Queen Of Them All.” The upbeat “No More Crying The Blues” evokes a Roy Orbison vibe. With their style, harmonies, melodies and words, the boys really capture the sound of old style country music while creating something very unique. As the brothers have said, “We weren’t born in the wrong era. We just got into some music from a different era and found a way to make it our own.”

– George Kopp
