In the year since YJY released their debut EP, Couch Surfin USA, vocalists/guitar players Steve Sachs and Ricky Lorenzo, bassist Tim Fitzpatrick and drummer Dave Sachs have won over the hearts of much of the northeast. Peddling their hook heavy surf-rock that blends melodic, indie-pop refrains with irreverent lyrics, they’ve picked up an impressive array of accolades, including Top Emerging Artist of 2015, Editors Pick, The Deli Magazine, Philadelphia, Top 50 Albums of 2015, Speak Into My Good Eye and Top Local Releases of 2015, Jersey Beat. Now the New Brunswick, NJ based pals are gearing up to release their sophomore EP, The Same Noise, out August 19th via Sniffling Indie Kids.

Today, Elmore is premiering “Through Being Hip,” a track from the band’s upcoming release. It’s a quirky, catchy jam that clocks in at barely over two minutes but packs major attitude, the breezy, power-pop combo of guitar and drums mixing with the slightly snarky punch of lead vocals. Steve Sachs told Elmore all about the track’s inspiration; “I wrote “Through Being Hip” after spending some time looking around this boutique thrift shop in a super trendy and recently gentrified neighborhood. I talked to the person behind the counter for a bit and I got a sense that five years prior, this person would have been exactly the type of person who self-identified as someone who ‘hated hipsters.’ And yet, here they were, working at this shop.” He adds, “I started wondering about that transition, and I was curious what would come next for this person once our culture moves on from its current definitions of what’s cool. Would they move on too, or is this ‘who they really are?’ I think a lot of people think this song is like an anti-hipster anthem, but it’s not. It’s about a person who is confronting the fact that they’ve continually allowed different subcultures to define them rather than finding a way to define themselves.”
