Premiere: Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar

Samantha Martin and Delta Sugar’s latest recording, Run to Me, is a massive step forward for both Martin and Delta Sugar. Martin wrote or co-wrote (with Curtis Chaffey or Suzie Vinnick) the 10 songs, which explore love: desire, betrayal and that rarity, emotional and sexual satisfaction. With incisive lyrics, arresting melodies and clever harmonies and arrangements, they recall the best of the Stax sound and contemporary artists such as Leon Bridges, Sharon Jones, and Lee Fields.

As the lead singer, songwriter and focal point of the group, Martin can summon tidal waves of emotion or delicately bring out nuances. Delta Sugar is not the work of a single talent, however. “Co-vocalists,” Sherie Marshall and newest member Mwansa Mwansa combine to produce gospel-tinged magic.

Martin herself loves performing and making sure Delta Sugar and the audience connect.
