Sometimes, tall tales are true

The aptly-named Starlight and Tall Tales, Bart Ryan’s most intimate album to date, is a collection of “stories told over a bottle of wine under the stars,” as Ryan described it, all garnered from his experiences touring the globe.

Raised in the shadow of the Hollywood Hills, Ryan was mesmerized by the signature sounds of Albert Collins, David Gilmour, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, learning licks and playing nightclubs with Coco Montoya and other LA blues masters before he was old enough to buy a drink. Now based in Nashville, this session guitarist and award-winning singer/songwriter also tours worldwide as an artist in his own right, and writing songs for himself, other artists and films like the Oscar-winner The Descendants.

Today’s political situation prompted “Evil,” a track Ryan spoke about with Elmore.

“Sometimes you run into someone who just doesn’t know how to act in public, Someone who missed a few lessons on being a decent person, someone who makes everything worse. Sometimes the universe goes crazy and someone like that ends up in a position of power. Well, the psychotic carnival has really been in town the last few years and everybody is exhausted. Enough already. Everybody’s blood pressure will go back to normal when Trump’s out. This video just took all the frustration and fury this guy and his little tribe have generated and puts it on the screen.

“It’s good fuel for art, right???”

Starlight and Tall Tales features a roster of heavy hitters from L.A. and Nashville, including Ryan’s three longtime collaborators, Jim Evans (drums), Ted Russell Kamp (bass), Mark Kovaly (keys) and Aubrey Richmond (violin). It also features Steve Smartt and Jeff Byrd on horns, Matt Higgins on bass, and Amber Gartner and Michael Mishaw on backing vocals. Mixing engineer Preston Tate White contributed so many  ideas that he ended up as the album’s co-producer, together with Ryan. Cameron Henry completed the finishing touches in mastering.
