WFMU Record Fair Cancelled, Station Taking Pledges Following Sandy Damage

This weekend was supposed to be the WFMU Record Fair, an event organized by the one of the nation’s premier independent radio stations as a celebration of vinyl and vinylphiles everywhere. As many of you know, we’re big fans of vinyl here at Elmore: our executive director Arnie Goodman writes a column on collecting vinyl in every issue, and our re-issues editor Paul Aaronson was scheduled to have a booth at this year’s record fair.

Then Hurricane Sandy came. As a result of the massive flooding and winds that ravaged New York and New Jersey, WFMU was unfortunately forced to cancel this year’s record fair. As of this writing, there are no plans to reschedule this year’s record fair, though next year’s record fair is definitely happening.

However, WFMU has a few more problems as a result of Sandy: the storm severely damaged the station’s broadcast building and damaged their two radio transmitters. Listeners are still able to stream the station through their website at WFMU.org, but this is a huge blow to their operations, especially since they survive on donations and pledges from their audience. We here at Elmore share WFMU’s fondness for vinyl, for interesting music that may be beyond the mainstream reach, and for music in general. We hope that you can find the time to help keep them going, and we hope to see you at next year’s record fair.
