William Hurt Cast As Gregg Allman In Biopic

William Hurt Gregg AllmanThe Gregg Allman biopic has its Gregg Allman. Variety reports that Oscar winner William Hurt will play the modern-day version of the Southern rock singer in Midnight Rider, the upcoming film based on Allman’s memoirs.

Hurt joins All-American Rejects singer Tyson Ritter, who will be playing Gregg’s younger self, and actor Wyatt Russell, who will be playing the late, great Duane Allman. The film is set to begin production in February.

A film adaptation of Allman’s book My Cross To Bear has been in development for some time, and in a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Allman revealed that part of the process involved making sure that the film gets everything right. He has already used his reported veto power on the movie, saying that the first draft of the film’s script “wasn’t us.” The film is just one of Allman’s many projects this year, which marks the 45th anniversary of the Allman Brothers Band. Allman is also working on two solo albums.
