To call Naomi Shelton a gospel singer would be an accurate description, but it would also be missing the point. There’s so much more to her than just gospel. Shelton has been playing music for over 50 years, and she’s finally started to get her due as part of the roster on the excellent soul/R&B label Daptone Records. While the label is primarily known for the likes of Charles Bradley and Sharon Jones, Shelton is one of Daptone’s hidden gems; her wholly unique take on gospel, coupled with that powerful, unmistakable voice, should please any fans of the genre. Shelton’s music is something that has to be seen to be believed, and she’s giving fans that opportunity with a performance at Brooklyn’s Plymouth Church. Don’t miss this one.
