Foo Fighters Release New Single, Cover Cheap Trick On ‘Letterman’

Well, it’s finally here. After months of hype, Foo Fighters have released the first song off of their hotly-anticipated new album, Sonic Highways. Titled “Something From Nothing,” the song was recorded in Chicago with Steve Albini working behind the boards with the band. While the song doesn’t quite have the raw intensity that Albini brought to Dave Grohl’s old band on In Utero, the song is certainly more foreboding and less polished than the band normally are. Foo Fighters also continued their week-long residency at The Late Show With David Letterman last night with one of the collaborators on Sonic Highways: Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. Nielsen joined the band for a performance of his band’s song “Stiff Competition,” which found Grohl behind the drumkit while Foos drummer Taylor Hawkins did his best Robin Zander impression. Sonic Highways comes out on November 10th. A documentary series chronicling the making of the album begins airing tonight on HBO.
