Premiere: Chelsea Williams comes back around

"Lonely Girl," on her Boomerang release

The music business has changed dramatically, and critically-hailed independent music sensation Chelsea Williams is on the cutting edge, having sold 100,000 copies of her first CDs at residency gigs. The reason she’s doing well, however, is old-school: her songwriting and golden voice are impeccable, and “every instrument on the record was played by a person,” Williams stated proudly. “No samples or synths.”

Either the music industry’s best- or worst-kept secret, Williams has appeared on The Today Show, opened for big names such as the Avett Brothers and Dwight Yoakam, and dueted with Adam Levine in Maroon 5’s video for “Daylight (Playing For Change),” yet she found her true musical voice by busking on the streets of her home town, Glendale, CA, and arguably made her biggest impact performing her music on the Third Street Promenade in Santa Monica.

The Americana, indie-folk and lush pop rising star releases her label debut, Boomerang on Blue Élan Records August 18—ultimately because Blue Élan President Kirk Pasich heard Williams play on the Promenade.

With characteristic wit and honesty, Williams told Elmore: “This song may have been a side effect of watching a staggering amount of Tarantino movies in a short amount of time.” See if you agree…
