A vital songwriter and virtuoso guitarist, Eric Schenkman is a founding member of the famed NYC band The Spin Doctors and co-wrote all five of their Top 100 hits, so it’s no surprise that his third self-produced solo album, is so good. Who Shot John? showcases the many sides of Eric Schenkman, from rockin’ blues to funk, soul and pop.

Opening track “I’m Alright” starts the collection off with some Chicago blues realness that, as hard as it hits, also manages to flash some of Schenkman’s playfulness in both the lyrics and guitar. He collaborates with respected drummer Van Romaine (Enrique Iglesias) and co-producer/bassist Shawn Kellerman (Lucky Peterson), and keeps everything tight and simple. Schenkman asked another longtime pal, North Mississippi All Stars drummer Cody Dickinson, to play electric washboard on the title track.

Schenkman is performing a residency in his current hometown of Toronto every Wednesday at Grossman’s Tavern, and the good news is that if you can’t hear him play live, this CD is the next best thing, with all the kick of a live performance, especially with last song “Agent Orange.” The rumba feel of “Fortune Teller” and the soulful love song “Only A Fool” round out a very good album.
