Whitey Johnson, who of course is Gary Nicholson’s alter ego, brings along a great group of musicians and singers to help him on this new disc, including Colin Linden, Delbert McClinton, The McCrary Sisters Jimmy Hall and Kevin McKendree.

The music is fun and Whitey brings his own brand to songs that many of the listeners will recognize, as they were written by Nicholson and fellow writers and recorded by other artists, including Buddy Guy (“The Blues Is Alive And Well”), Robert Plant (“If It’s Really Gotta Be This Way”), Foghat (“Upside of Lonely”) and Delbert McClinton (“Starting A Rumor”). Songs written with and recorded by Seth Walker, “More Days Like This” and “High Time,” open and close the album.

Whitey Johnson is a great interpreter of these songs, which were written by a band of great songwriters including Guy Clark, McClinton, Donnie Fritts, Arthur Alexander, Jimmy Thackery, and of course Nicholson! The diversity among these writers contributes to the diversity of people who have recorded them.

There are three new songs on the project, “Friction,” “Hold What I Got” and “Soulshine,” which was recently recorded by The Texas Horns.

There is a great feel to this album, with the music reaching in and making you want to smile and clap your hands and get up and dance. Production by Nicholson is excellent, and fans of this multi-talented singer and musician will want to grab a copy for their music library.
