Veteran Americana songwriter Will Kimbrough has documented this unprecedented moment in history with a new solo acoustic record, Spring Break, titled from Spring 2020–or as Kimbrough puts it, “When the world broke, and we all took a break.” In the storytelling tradition of Folkways and Vanguard records, Spring Break tells the tale of a time that changed the civilization

On tour in Australia and forced to return to Nashville, Kimbrough, inspired by the current climate, used the opportunity to write relentlessly, filtering events through his unique personal lens. Though his songs have been recorded by the likes of Jimmy Buffett, Little Feat, Todd Snider, Jack Ingram, Gretchen Peters and many others, these songs are personal to Kimbrough.

“When John Prine passed from COVID, I wrote The Late Great John Prine Blues. Then, I finished a song with a songwriting hero, Milton Brown–who also happens to be one of Jimmy Buffett’s early mentors—’Digging a Ditch with a Spoon. Before I knew it, I had 14 solo acoustic songs recorded that I just loved,” he said. “I wrote All Fall Down with my friend Rich McCulley, after discussing the strange world of the politics surrounding COVID and the divided United States,” he explained, telling Elmore, “I told videographer James DeMain to let his imagination run free. I created this song, and I wanted him to create the video. I’m really happy with this little piece of film. A taste of 2020, however bitter, is what this song expresses, with a spoonful of hope.”

Will Kimbrough continues to deliver music to thousands of fans through his Patreon page and a weekly Facebook Live show, both of which feature live performances, podcasts, and musical instruction.
